Ngā Akoranga - Year 1
The Heke Whare Tapere (HWT) is the first year of study in a three year programme in the expression of Māori concepts, behaviour, values and history in song and dance. On completion of the diploma the graduands will gain entry into the Poutuarongo Whare Tapere (PWT).
The graduands will develop the exponents of kapa haka, be skilled and active performers with a working knowledge of te reo, composition, choreography, and production. The graduands will further develop into bilingual and bicultural performers and composers of performing arts for whānau, hapū and iwi, Māori and non-Māori organisations.
Future pathways for graduates are:
- teaching (secondary, tertiary)
- consultant (tikanga and te reo)
- cultural advisor / guidance to various organisations
- research / policy analyst
- broadcasting – radio and television and
- managing Māori organisation.
This one year Heke (Diploma) is NZQA approved at level 5.

The Poutuarongo Whare Tapere (PWT) is a three-year degree programme of study in the expression of Māori concepts, behaviour, values and history in song and dance. Ngā Akoranga
The Poupou Karanga (PpK) aims to provide an opportunity, through Karanga, for women to savour the richness of our heritage, to call upon the knowledge of our Tupuna – Wāhine. It brings forth from each individual, a creative life, which reflects the values of our past, our present and our future. The Poupou Karanga (PpK) will imbue the participants with a deep appreciation of this traditional art form.
Future pathways for graduates are:
- to become an exponent of the Karanga art form
- tutoring and
- further study.
This Poupou (Certificate) is NZQA approved at level 1.
