The Heke is a one-year programme, comprising the first year of the Poutuarongo Ahunga Tikanga (PAT).  The Heke focuses on tikanga Māori, by exploring the presence of tikanga Māori as a highly successful and self contained system of law.

The PAT programme aims to introduce students to Māori legal systems which existed prior to contact with Pākeha; to consider the influence of Pākeha values on our legal systems; and to critique the legal processes that we encounter in contemporary times.

Future pathways for PAT graduates include:

  • Indigenous rights issues
  • Research roles for hapū and iwi
  • Iwi claims researchers
  • Tikanga advisors
  • Further study.

This one year Heke (Diploma) is NZQA approved at level 5. The three year Poutuarongo (Bachelors Degree) is NZQA approved at level 7.



Te Poutāhū Ahunga Tikanga (PtAT)
Te Tāhuhu Ahunga Tikanga (TAT)
Duration One-year postgraduate and two-year masters degree programme
Starts February

Ngā Akoranga

The Tāhuhu Ahunga Tikanga (TAT) aims to produce students who are bilingual and involved with their own iwi and hapū developments, who will take an active interest in tikanga Māori and the implementation of tikanga principles in the daily lives of hapū and iwi members.  It develops bilingual and bicultural philosophers of legal processes and tikanga Māori concepts for whānau, hapū and iwi, Māori and non-Māori organisations.

Future pathways for TAT graduates include:

  • Preparation and presentation of Waitangi Tribunal claims
  • Indigenous rights issues
  • Senior positions within government departments
  • Further study.

 This one year Poutāhū (Post-graduate Diploma) is NZQA approved at level 8. The two year Tāhuhu (Masters Degree) is NZQA approved at level 9.
