With the rapid growth in kaupapa Māori learning institutions and schools offering kaupapa Māori education programmes, demand is increasing for well trained and qualified Māori teachers. Te Wānanga o Raukawa offers its innovative three-year teaching degree, Poutuārongo Whakaakoranga (PW).
This programme produces graduates who can teach people to see the world through Māori eyes and are competent to teach a range of subjects using the Māori language. The PW is NZQA accredited and approved by the NZ Teaching Council. The Heke Whakaakoranga is awarded to those who successfully complete their first year of study in the PW.

Te Wānanga o Raukawa has designed a one year study path for holders of a Diploma in Teaching to gain the immersion teaching degree Poutuarongo Whakaakoranga (PW).
Kaiwhakaako or teachers who have had several years of classroom experience are invited to apply to enter. An entry criteria to the PW programme applies.
The pathway is most appropriate for those who have a reasonable to high fluency in te reo Māori, a strong desire to teach others to see the world through Māori eyes, and the aptitude to undertake extensive whakatupu mātauranga on their hapū and iwi.
Those who do not have a good proficiency in te reo Māori may apply to enter but will be required to also undertake reo studies.

Ngā Akoranga
The Tāhuhu Whakaakoranga (TW) produces teachers with a postgraduate qualification, who are competent and confident to take a strong leadership role, in both managerial and delivery aspects of kaupapa Māori learning environments. The focus of the first year is on delivery and teaching, while the second year covers aspects of management and leadership within kaupapa Māori learning institutions.
The Poutāhuhū Whakaakoranga, PtW is awarded on successful completion of year one of the masters degree.

The Poutuarongo Te Rangakura - Kaiwhakaako (PTRK) produces graduates with the necessary knowledge, attitudes and skills needed to access and impart “taonga tuku iho”, as drawn from the study of iwi & hapū values, knowledge and institutions, in a way that is consistent with the notion of a Māori world view curriculum and its application in the kaupapa Māori educational context.
