poutuarongo kawa oranga

bachelor of health promotion, sport and exercise sciences

Kawa Oranga is a three year bachelor qualification that will provide you with the skills and mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge) to pursue an exciting career in the ever-expanding health industry helping others to improve their wellbeing.

Taught out of Ngā Purapura, a high performance training centre based at Te Wānanga o Raukawa in Ōtaki, this distinctive environment will immerse you in a contemporary model for whānau and community wellbeing.  Equip yourself with the essential kaupapa (guiding principles), tikanga (practices) and kawa (protocols) pertaining to wellbeing that will become the foundations of your practice in promoting and assisting others with health and wellbeing goals.

This degree aims to empower you with the knowledge, skills and practical experiences required to make a meaningful leadership contribution to Māori wellbeing initiatives. It also represents an evolving philosophy for Māori wellbeing underpinned by ongoing research and exploration into mātauranga Māori, Māori wellbeing, health promotion, sport and exercise sciences.

A defining element of the Kawa Oranga journey is a strong emphasis on the acquisition of te reo Māori alongside an increased awareness of whānau, hapū and iwi dynamics. These components ensure graduates are sufficiently equipped with the necessary building blocks of Māori cultural identity that are critical for meaningful mana-enhancing engagement with Māori communities. Kawa Oranga is further supported by a number of kaiāwhina from across Aotearoa comprising of leading Māori academics and researchers together with recognised Māori wellbeing, sports and exercise specialists who each bring a range of skills, career experiences, specialist expertise and Māori cultural awareness to the classroom.

To enrol in this qualification you must first complete the Heke Kawa Oranga, introducing you to kaupapa and tikanga in relation to healthy lifestyles, and the role of kawa in sport and exercise. These concepts are expanded upon in the Kawa Oranga degree programme that provides a balance of classroom theory, practical application in a fitness facility, whakatupu mātauranga on hapū and iwi, te reo Māori, and practical experience with sporting groups and organisations in the community.

As a graduate of these programmes you will be an agent for the promotion of kawa oranga providing te taha tinana guidance and leadership in balance with the other aspects that contribute to the wellbeing of the individual as a part of their whānau, hapū and iwi communities.

TE REO AND IWI AND HAPŪ STUDIES

Each year, you will complete weekly tutorials and activities in Te Reo via our online space, Mūrau. These not only prepare you to attend two six-day long hui rumaki reo on campus at the end of each semester; but will further enhance your Kawa Oranga journey as you learn the value and mana our language holds in the wellbeing space. Yes, it can be scary, but you will not be taking the journey alone nor do you do not need to have any reo to begin! You will be guided every step of the way with tutor support.

You will also study two papers in Iwi and Hapū studies to compliment your learning, these are often the most rewarding part of study for the majority of our students as they gain a deep connection back to their roots. Your Iwi and Hapū papers will be online with excellent tutor support to help you through, week by week activities. The assignments that you complete will become a taonga and resource for your whānau, marae, iwi and will be treasured for years to come.

Te Reo and Iwi and Hapū studies begin in the first week of the academic year, so you can begin your studies before your first specialisation noho. You will also get the opportunity to meet your reo and iwi and hapū pūkenga during your first noho on campus.
