If you have ever wanted to be a teacher in a whānau class or bilingual setting this qualification is for you.
This course is taught in te reo Māori and English.
The mātauranga (knowledge) you will learn is drawn from the study of iwi and hapū values, knowledge and institutions in a way that is consistent with the notion of a Māori world view curriculum and its application in the kaupapa Māori educational context.
Develop a sound knowledge of Te Marautanga o Aotearoa and the New Zealand curriculum, Māori pedagogies, planning, teaching assessment and evaluation of teaching practices plus the importance of internal management systems and their relevance. Become a confident professional within the sector by critically analysing policies, procedures and documents relevant to both English and Māori teaching environments, and applying methods of teaching appropriate for optimum child development.
During the three years you will undertake a minimum of 21 weeks teaching practicum in a primary school setting giving you the opportunity to experience and practise methods learnt during residential seminars and through individual research. You will be supported every step of the way as you begin your journey from learning to teaching, this is also an excellent qualification towards higher progression in the education sector.
Poutuarongo Te Rangakura Whakaakoranga, Bachelor of Teaching (Bilingual), is eligible for Teach NZ scholarships. Check on the Teach NZ website for more information.
To enrol in this qualification you must first complete the Heke Te Rangakura Kaiwhakaako which is a one year diploma and the first year towards this three year qualification.

Entry Requirements: Applicants under the age of 20 must have university entrance (UE) or the equivalent to UE. The literacy, numeracy and ITC competency assessments will be used to ensure that applicants over the age of 20 meet comparable literacy and numeracy requirements as those entering with UE. Applicants will also have a strong commitment to develop te reo Māori me ōna tikanga and incorporate te reo into their teaching practice. Students will require regular internet access, email address and computer, laptop, tablet or other suitable mobile device is required.
