bachelor of environmental management

Te toto o te tangata, he kai, te oranga o te tangata, he whenua – Food supplies the blood of our people, our welfare depends on the land. Turn your passion for nature and science into a career as you deepen your connection to te taiao and hone your skills to become a guardian of our environment.

As increasing environmental issues continue to impact on the future survival of our natural resources across the planet, this three year degree will prepare you to make a significant contribution in this sector. Explore sustainability and ecological restoration strategies in relation to natural resource management, as well as aspects of environmental science and law. Consider ongoing concerns about food sources and supply, water sovereignty, waste and other issues alongside the roles and responsibilities of tangata whenua in the protection of our environment.

Learning occurs through a variety of mediums, including online deliveries, hands-on research and field trips, such as examining biodiversity on Kāpiti Island and monitoring a freshwater body for your hapū. You will learn to identify native birds and their calls, indigenous plants and their traditional uses. Environmental planning, eel fisheries, wetlands and other natural habitats feature strongly, as does building an awareness of alternative methods for sustainable and eco-efficient building construction.

As a graduate of the Kaitiakitanga Pūtaiao degree you will be equipped with the skills to support hapū self-determination and development aspirations for te taiao (our environment) within tikanga management frameworks. This includes planning and project management, negotiating local and central government constructs, cultural assessments and representation on environmental matters.

To enrol in this qualification you must first complete the Heke Kaitiakitanga Pūtaiao which is a one year diploma and the first year towards this three year qualification.

TE REO AND IWI AND HAPŪ STUDIES

Each year, you will complete weekly tutorials and activities in Te Reo via our online space, Mūrau. These not only prepare you to attend two six-day long hui rumaki reo on campus at the end of each semester; but will further enhance your journey as you learn the value and mana our language holds in the taiao space. Yes, it can be scary, but you will not be taking the journey alone nor do you do not need to have any reo to begin! You will be guided every step of the way with tutor support.

You will also study two papers in Iwi and Hapū studies to compliment your learning, these are often the most rewarding part of study for the majority of our students as they gain a deep connection back to their roots. Your Iwi and Hapū papers will be online with excellent tutor support to help you through, week by week activities. The assignments that you complete will become a taonga and resource for your whānau, marae, iwi and will be treasured for years to come. You are encouraged to complete your iwi and hapū studies through the eyes of a kaitiaki and use them to create meaningful taonga for future generations.

Te Reo and Iwi and Hapū studies begin in the first week of the academic year, so you can begin your studies before your first specialisation noho. You will also get the opportunity to meet your reo and iwi and hapū pūkenga during your first noho on campus.
