FIRST HUI RUMAKI REO FOR THE YEAR

Te Ara a Tāwhaki, Ōtaki
19 May 2025
Get ready, because this week marks the exciting return of our hui rumaki reo at Te Wānanga o Raukawa. It’s the very first one on campus for the year! These are immersive language seminars and are something truly special. For those unfamiliar, hui rumaki reo are like stepping into a whole new world, a world where te reo Māori is at the centre of everything. From the moment you wake up to the moment you rest your head, it's te reo Māori all the way. Students, kaiako, kaimahi, and anyone within the rumaki reo environment will fully embrace the beauty of the language, using it as the only means of communication.
Why do we do this? Because immersion is magic when it comes to language learning! Surrounding ourselves with te reo Māori in every part of our daily lives, from the classroom to the kai table to casual chats in the corridor, is one of the most powerful ways to strengthen fluency and confidence. It’s not just learning the language; it’s living it.
Our commitment to te reo Māori doesn't stop with the students. According to our strategic plan, every member of the Te Wānanga o Raukawa whānau is encouraged to participate in hui rumaki reo alongside our akonga. That’s right, kaimahi from every corner of the campus will be giving it their all, using te reo Māori during everyday activities and regular mahi.
So, throughout this week (and future hui rumaki reo), the entire campus will hum with the sound of te reo Māori. Whether you’re grabbing a coffee, heading to a class, or walking through the courtyard, expect to hear and speak our beautiful language. Let’s celebrate, learn, and uplift te reo Māori together.
Kia kaha tātou ki te kōrero Māori
