poupou huia te reo 3

Certificate in Māori Language and Tikanga for the home, community, marae and workplace - Intermediate-Advanced (Level 5)

Poupou Huia Te Reo 3 is an intermediate to advanced Level 5 online Māori language certificate designed for graduates of Poupou Huia Te Reo 1 and 2 who are ready to deepen their understanding and use of te reo Māori in everyday, professional, cultural, and community contexts.

This programme has been carefully developed for adult learners and provides a rich learning experience through structured repetition, scaffolded language learning, and immersive online activities over 20 weeks. Learners will further develop their confidence in speaking, listening, comprehension, writing, and language analysis while engaging with language in both traditional and contemporary Māori settings.

Poupou Huia Te Reo 3 is delivered fully online and combines daily learning activities, lessons, oral exercises, forum discussions, and assessments designed to challenge and strengthen language acquisition. Learning activities are intentionally structured to support the development of meaningful language patterns and improve recall through regular engagement and practice.

Throughout the programme, students will explore a range of cultural and language content including karakia, mōteatea, kīwaha, karapipiti, advanced pepeha development, and contextual reo relating to whānau, marae, and community environments. Traditional and contemporary pūrākau are also incorporated throughout the programme to support language learning through a cultural lens.

We recommend students spend approximately 20 hours per week engaging with course content, activities, speaking exercises, and independent practice. Students are encouraged to actively use te reo Māori outside of the online environment by engaging with whānau, friends, and other speakers wherever possible. Consistent use and repetition are key components of successful language development.

The programme is designed to be flexible and accessible, allowing students to structure learning around work, whānau, and other commitments. Downloadable resources, audio materials, and online support are provided throughout the duration of the programme.

One-on-one pūkenga support, academic support, technical assistance, and wellbeing services are available to all students. Weekly online speaking opportunities and interactive activities also help learners build confidence in practical language use.

What makes learning through Te Wānanga o Raukawa unique is the integration of tikanga Māori alongside language acquisition. The programme supports not only the development of reo Māori, but also deeper connections to mātauranga Māori, iwi narratives, identity, and cultural understanding.

Poupou Huia Te Reo 3 provides a pathway for graduates wishing to continue advancing their reo journey and strengthen their ability to confidently engage within Māori language environments.
