What You'll Learn
As a mode of communication, whaikōrero uses poetry, proverb, incantation, metaphor, imagery and symbolism to give gravity and formality to occasions of significance upon which the mana of the two parties of the marae encounter rests. It has its origins in a Māori belief system.
The aim of the course is to enhance your capability in whaikōrero, both as an art form and mode of communication in various situations. This will be achieved by adding to your kete kōrero in the various sections of whaikōrero and through instruction in the use of voice, stance, rākau and other delivery methods.
Poupou Tū Whaikōrero is offered as a course for groups at marae and those in kaupapa Māori based environments, however to support our tāne this qualification is also available for study from the Ōtaki campus and will be delivered online.
Hapū may wish to consider running the Poupou Tū Whaikōrero alongside the Poupou Karanga at their marae. The recommended group size is 30 or more participants from either course, or a combination of participants from both courses.
Course Structure
Poupou Tū Whaikōrero is taught over four noho (immersive gatherings). The course is available online from Ōtaki campus, or as a group cohort at your marae, kura, or kaupapa Māori workplace.
Minimum age of 17 years. Regular internet access, email address and computer or laptop with a working mic and camera are required. A sound knowledge of Te Reo Māori is not required but beneficial.

WHAI1A - Te Marae O Tū
The aim of this course of study is to provide a foundation for the potential kaikōrero by considering the origins and purpose of whaikōrero, the role of the kaikōrero within Māori society, the kaupapa, tikanga and structure of whaikōrero, and, the associated art forms that complement and enhance the delivery of whaikōrero.

WHAI1B - Te Whare Kōrero
The aim of this course of study is to embed oratory skills and knowledge in the potential kaikōrero with emphasis on structure, delivery styles and tikanga associated with the dress and bearing of the kaikōrero, and the use of rākau and other related instruments in the performance of the kaikōrero role.

WHAI1C - Te Pae Tapu
The aim of this course of study is for students to perform the role of a kaikōrero as part of the pae tapu, upholding the kawa by the application of tikanga, which ensure that the kaupapa of the hui is addressed collectively and appropriate responses are made to issues raised.

Four Noho (Immersive Gatherings) The programme is structured around four noho — intensive learning sessions that bring participants together for deep cultural immersion and practice.
Online Delivery Available from Ōtaki campus delivered online — study from anywhere in Aotearoa with weekly activities and tutor support.
Group Cohort at Your Marae or Kura For groups of 30 or more, Poupou Tū Whaikōrero can be delivered at your own marae, kura, or kaupapa Māori environment.
Practical Whaikōrero Practice Develop and refine your oratory skills through guided practice — building the confidence to stand and speak on your own marae.
Online Seminars (Noho) Engage in online webinars and tutorials with opportunities for discussion and wananga learning.

Is This Course Right For You?
Whaikōrero is both an art form and mode of communication. As an art form, whaikōrero should exhibit te ihi (wonder), te kaha (power), te huatau (elegance), and te wana (the thrill) that Māori performing arts in general achieve and cause the audience to react in wehi (excitement) and ranga wairua (inspiration).
