What You'll Learn
Over the course of this three year degree you will expand on and incorporate extensive studies in kaitiakitanga, tohungatanga, roles on the marae, paepae and science and technology in a mātauranga Māori context. Examine ngā tikanga tuku iho (our inherited treasures) including the creation of Māori art forms, karakia and associated pūrākau. Identify and explore the characteristics of atua Māori, look at concepts such as iwi, hapū and whānau, iwi oral tradition and gain a sound knowledge of marae protocol and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Te reo, iwi and hapū studies are an intrinsic part of each year of the degree. As a graduate you will be able to offer advice on aspects of tikanga Māori and its role and relevance in today’s world in a wide range of professional, personal, whānau, iwi and hapū settings.
To enrol in this qualification you must first complete the Heke Mātauranga Māori which is a one year diploma and the first year towards this three year qualification. The diploma examines ngā tikanga tuku iho, Māori art and design concepts, iwi oral traditions and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. You will undertake research about your marae and develop your te reo Māori skills, including mihimihi, waiata and karakia.
Years two and three of the Poutuarongo Mātauranga Māori expand further on ngā taonga tuku iho and incorporate more in-depth studies in kaitiakitanga, tohungatanga, roles on the marae, paepae and science and technology in the mātauranga Māori context.
Course Structure
The Poutuarongo Mātauranga Māori is a three-year bachelor's degree. Year One is completed through the Heke Mātauranga Māori (Diploma in Mātauranga Māori). Each year includes weekly te reo tutorials via Mūrau and two five-day hui rumaki reo on campus.
Minimum age of 17 years. Regular internet access, email address and computer or laptop with a working mic and camera are required.

PMMA101 – Māori Art and Design
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the techniques and materials used to create Māori art forms.

The aim of this course of study is to introduce students to mātauranga and tikanga inherited from tūpuna Māori and their application.

PMMA103 - Marae Performance
The aim of this course is to introduce students to marae-based performing arts to the extent that they will acquire the skills to actively participate as part of the protocol of the pōwhiri.

PMMA104 - the Tikanga Māori House: Te Tiriti O Waitangi and Mātauranga Māori
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the ‘Tikanga Māori House’ as a constitutional model and its potential to give effect to the articles of the Treaty of Waitangi.

To conduct a private study of one marae in order to identify and strengthen connections to ‘the marae as our principal home’.

The overall aim of the year one reo programme encourages analysis of basic grammar through the online course; an introduction to written Māori; research through self-directed learning and oral practice in the Māori language through Hui Rumaki Reo with an emphasis on marae activities.

To examine the major features and characteristics of a selected hapū in order to deepen our understanding of hapū origins and group survival.

The aim of this course is to consider and critically comment on kaitiakitanga as a field of mātauranga Māori concerning human interaction with the environment, and international declarations that reflect the intent of kaitiakitanga.

The overall aim of the year three reo programme encourages deeper analysis of grammar through online learning activities; developed research techniques into acquiring the language through self-directed learning, oral practice in the language in a range of formal and informal situations with care and attention given to a higher degree of accuracy and quality in the language through Hui Rumaki Reo activities and accumulating more ‘flying time’ encourages creative thought with a continued emphasis on marae activities.

Is This Course Right For You?
Studies in Mātauranga Māori will introduce you to understandings of human behaviour based on concepts handed down through generations, giving you the ability to see, live and breathe from a Māori world view.
Te whakamāramatanga o ngā tikanga tuku iho e puta ai te titiro a te Māori ki tōna ao. Learn kaupapa and tikanga Māori that define the way we view the world as Māori. Explore Māori knowledge as our tūpuna understood it, as we understand it today and as it will be applied tomorrow. For anyone aspiring to work with or for a Māori organisation and in kaupapa Māori environments, this qualification is a must.
Te Reo and Iwi and Hapū Studies
Each year, you will complete weekly tutorials and activities in Te Reo via our online space, Mūrau. These not only prepare you to attend two five-day long hui rumaki reo on campus at the end of each semester; but will further enhance your journey as you learn the value and mana our language holds in the mātauranga Māori space. Yes, it can be scary, but you will not be taking the journey alone nor do you do not need to have any reo to begin! You will be guided every step of the way with tutor support.
You will also study two papers each year in Iwi and Hapū studies to compliment your learning, these are often the most rewarding part of study for the majority of our students as they gain a deep connection back to their roots. Your Iwi and Hapū papers will be online with excellent tutor support to help you through, week by week activities. The assignments that you complete will become a taonga and resource for your whānau, marae, iwi and will be treasured for years to come. You are encouraged to complete your iwi and hapū studies through the eyes of a tūpuna and use them to create meaningful taonga for future generations.
Te Reo and Iwi and Hapū studies begin in the first week of the academic year, so you can begin your studies before your first specialisation noho. You will also get the opportunity to meet your reo and iwi and hapū pūkenga during your first noho on campus.
