Using the rich heritage of te iwi Māori you will examine the values and principles of pūrākau (origin stories) learning their relevance to karanga. Taught over four noho, you will examine kōrero about atua wāhine to find their values, morals and lessons while gaining the necessary skills to start your journey to become a competent kaikaranga.

For women who want to gain the knowledge and confidence to stand on their marae as a kaikaranga, this course is a great start. This is also an excellent option if you are looking to reconnect with your cultural identity or take the first initial steps to further study in mātauranga Māori or te reo Māori. Poupou Karanga is also ideal for anyone already working in a kaupapa Maōri based environment.

Poupou Karanga is usually offered as a qualification for groups at marae and those in kaupapa Māori based environments. To support our wāhine this qualification is also available for study from the Ōtaki campus and will be delivered online.

Hapū may wish to consider running the Poupou Karanga alongside the Poupou Tū Whaikōrero at their marae. The recommended group size is 30 or more participants from either course, or a combination of participants from both courses.
