What You'll Learn
Graduates will be skilled in teaching various subjects in te reo Māori and through a Māori perspective. They will confidently support and guide their learners, teach across all subjects using mātauranga, and advocate for Māori medium education in immersion, bilingual, and mainstream schools.
Students will complete three, eight-week teaching placements in a primary school kura. The Poutuarongo is awarded to those who successfully complete three years of study.
The Poutuarongo Whakaakoranga, Bachelor of Teaching (Māori Medium), is NZQA accredited and approved by Matatū Aotearoa | Teaching Council Aotearoa, New Zealand.

To enrol in this qualification you must first complete the Heke Whakaakoranga which is a one year diploma and the first year towards the three year qualification.
Course Structure
Poutuarongo Whakaakoranga (Māori Medium) is a three-year bachelor's degree taught entirely in te reo Māori. Year One is completed through the Heke Whakaakoranga diploma. Each year includes Iwi and Hapū studies and te reo Māori development.
To enrol in this qualification you must first complete the Heke Whakaakoranga (Diploma in Teaching — Māori Medium), which forms Year One of this three-year degree. This course is taught in te reo Māori.

Course of Study
PWA101 - Tautake Māori
Students will develop an understanding and appreciation of different types of anga tautake Māori within Māori immersion environments and increase their te reo Māori fluency.

Students will understand the purpose of planning, assessment and evaluation and how they are used to inform best practice for a Māori immersion environment.

Students will observe and identify a range of kura management systems and strategies to enhance the experience of teaching and learning in a Māori immersion environment.

PWA104 - Marautanga
Students will complete designated assessment tasks.
Assessment tasks include:
a. participating in discussions
b. contributing to group tasks
c. creating and using teaching resources
d. creating and implementing learning tasks
e. presenting information
All assessments will be assessed at noho.

Students will observe and participate in the daily operation of a Māori immersion environment, performing at a basic level, the roles of a teaching practitioner.

To conduct a private study of one marae in order to identify and strengthen connections to ‘the marae as our principal home’.

Students will examine different types of tautake Māori and their purpose within Māori immersion environments.

IWI201 - Private Study of One Hapū
To examine the major features and characteristics of a selected hapū in order to deepen our understanding of hapū origins and group survival.

Students will gain a deeper appreciation of the cultural significance of a taonga to a selected hapū and/or iwi, and it’s role in strengthening, maintaining and enhancing relationships.

PWA301 - Tautake Māori
Students will analyse and assess anga tautake Māori within Māori immersion environments and the inherent connection within the kura, whānau, hapū, iwi and wider community, to build awareness of successful teaching and learning techniques, and increase their te reo Māori fluency, accuracy and authentic expressions.

To advance the students understanding of the intergenerational transmission of kōrero tuku iho in pre 1900’s Māori oral literature.

How You'll Learn
Residential Seminars (Noho) Attend on-campus noho at Te Wānanga o Raukawa for intensive immersion-based learning with your cohort.
Online Learning via Mūrau Complete weekly tutorials and activities online, with iwi/hapū studies and te reo development starting from week one.
Teaching Practicums Three eight-week supervised teaching placements in Māori medium primary schools across your three years.
Iwi and Hapū Papers Two papers per year delivered online with weekly tutor support — connecting your teaching to the knowledge of your own iwi and hapū.
Online Seminars (Noho) Engage in online webinars and tutorials with opportunities for discussion and wananga learning.

Is This Course Right For You?
This qualification is for those with a passion for teaching who want to become qualified Māori medium primary school teachers - developing the skills and te reo Māori needed to excel in kura immersion environments.
Te Reo and Iwi and Hapū Studies
This course is in Te Reo Māori.
You will study two papers each year towards your Iwi and Hapū studies to compliment your learning, these are often the most rewarding part of study for the majority of our students as they gain a deep connection back to their roots. Your Iwi and Hapū papers will be online with excellent tutor support to help you through, week by week activities. The assignments that you complete will become a taonga and resource for your whānau, marae, iwi and will be treasured for years to come.
Iwi and Hapū studies begin in the first week of the academic year, so you can begin your studies on or before your first specialisation noho. You will also get the opportunity to meet your Iwi and Hapū Pūkenga during your first noho on campus.
