What You'll Learn
This course requires the applicant to have had at least two years of experience within kura and can show evidence of this to meet the entry requirements for Year Two. Therefore, the process is robust, and the applicant must:
Complete an Expression of Interest (EOI) form, confirming their Kura and Tumuaki support of the applicant.
The Pūkenga of the course will review the EOI and arrange a hui with the applicant.
Following the hui, the applicant will be sent a Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) application. This requires the applicant to gather a portfolio of evidence that will be examined by a panel, against key teaching tasks of the Year 1 course papers.
If successful, the applicant will then be invited to attend an interview.
The successful applicant will then be accredited the Year One Iwi/Hapū and Specialist papers of the Poutuarongo Whakaakoranga course and will enter the programme as a Year Two tauira.
The Poutuarongo Whakaakoranga, Bachelor of Teaching (Kura Tuatahi, Rumaki Reo, EBITE), is NZQA accredited and approved by Matatū Aotearoa | Teaching Council Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Course Structure
Poutuarongo Whakaakoranga (Māori Medium EBITE) is a two-year bachelor's degree completed while you remain employed in your kura. Each year includes core teaching papers, Iwi and Hapū studies, and supervised practical teaching experience.
Must be employed or have volunteered in a Level 1 Māori medium kura for at least 2 consecutive years in the last 5. Must hold or be applying for LAT status. Intermediate to advanced te reo Māori required. Support from Tumuaki, iwi, and hapū required. Admission involves: Expression of Interest, Academic Review, RPL Portfolio, and Online Interview.

PWA101 - Tautake Māori
Students will develop an understanding and appreciation of different types of anga tautake Māori within Māori immersion environments and increase their te reo Māori fluency.

Students will understand the purpose of planning, assessment and evaluation and how they are used to inform best practice for a Māori immersion environment.

Students will observe and identify a range of kura management systems and strategies to enhance the experience of teaching and learning in a Māori immersion environment.

PWA104 - Marautanga

Assessment tasks include:
a. participating in discussions
b. contributing to group tasks
c. creating and using teaching resources
d. creating and implementing learning tasks
e. presenting information

To examine the major features and characteristics of a selected hapū in order to deepen our understanding of hapū origins and group survival.

Students will analyse and assess anga tautake Māori within Māori immersion environments and the inherent connection within the kura, whānau, hapū, iwi and wider community, to build awareness of successful teaching and learning techniques, and increase their te reo Māori fluency, accuracy and authentic expressions.

How You'll Learn
Employment-Based Teaching Practice Train as a teacher while remaining employed in your kura under a Limited Authority to Teach — real classroom experience from day one.
Residential Seminars (Noho) Attend on-campus noho at Te Wānanga o Raukawa for intensive learning alongside your cohort.
Online Delivery via Mūrau Complete weekly online tutorials, iwi/hapū papers, and course activities with tutor support throughout the year.
Regular internet access required A computer or laptop with functioning microphone and camera is required for online participation.
Online Seminars (Noho) Engage in online webinars and tutorials with opportunities for discussion and wananga learning.

Is This Course Right For You?
This course is an Employment Based Initial Teacher Education (EBITE) programme for those who work within Kura Māori (Māori Medium), have intermediate to advance level te reo Māori, have the support of their Tumuaki and wish to train as a student teacher under a Limited Authority to Teach (LAT) for the next two years. The applicant must have the support of a Kura Māori, through the Tumuaki and be assigned a Kaiako Hāpai for their two years of studies.
Te Reo and Iwi and Hapū Studies
This course is in Te Reo Māori.
You will study two papers each year towards your Iwi and Hapū studies to compliment your learning, these are often the most rewarding part of study for the majority of our students as they gain a deep connection back to their roots. Your Iwi and Hapū papers will be online with excellent tutor support to help you through, week by week activities. The assignments that you complete will become a taonga and resource for your whānau, marae, iwi and will be treasured for years to come.
Iwi and Hapū studies begin in the first week of the academic year, so you can begin your studies on or before your first specialisation noho. You will also get the opportunity to meet your Iwi and Hapū Pūkenga during your first noho on campus.
