What You'll Learn
Course Structure
The Tāhuhu Whakaakoranga is a two-year master's qualification. Year One is completed through the Poutāhū Whakaakoranga (Postgraduate Diploma in Education, Māori Medium). Year Two builds on this with advanced papers and deeper research.
For applicants 20 years and over. An undergraduate teaching degree or diploma; five or more years classroom teaching experience; a high level of fluency in te reo Māori, both oral and written, as the course is total immersion and evidence of support from a hapū and iwi to be provided.

AKO 401 - Te Hangarau Me Te Marautanga
Express Whanaungatanga and Ūkaipōtanga in an advanced practical study of maro that illuminates the worldview and vocational expertise ākonga bring to their profession.

AKO402 - Te Whakatakoto I Te Kupu Kōrero
An intensive study of the grammar of Māori with consideration of implications for teaching.

AKO403 - Te Hopu I Te Reo
This course considers three complementary points of view to language acquisition and the science of: the effects of the socio-cultural context in which language occurs, the processes involved in first and second language learning, and the nature of language produced by the learner.

AKO404 - Tūhuratia Te Ako
This is a research paper which provides an opportunity for students to reflect on their expression of tino rangatiratanga and elevation of te reo Māori in their role as a leader setting the foundations of a kura ā-mua.

To explore the depth of the contribution that kaumātua make to the statement ‘Our people are our wealth’.

To examine active participation on the marae through a study of hapū tikanga, and the contribution those tikanga make to the statement, ‘The marae is our principal home’.

REO401 Te Whakatupu I Te Reo I/Te Reo O Ngā Niupepa Māori
Kia whakatupu mātauranga te ākonga mā te ruku i te rerehua o te reo, tōna ngāwari, tōna hōhonu tōna ngahau, me te atamai o ō tātou tūpuna ki te tārai i ō rātou whakaaro i tāngia ai ki ngā nūpepa Māori tawhito o mua, o ngā tau 1840 ki ngā tau 1930.

The aim of this course of study is to give expression to whakapapa through ako by establishing a kaupapa tuku iho, future focused leadership framework tailored for Kura Tikanga Māori.

The aim of this course is to critically examine the expression of kaupapa tuku iho and tikanga through ako in the leadership of Māori medium education.

AKO503 – Te Tohu O Te Rangatira: He Kura Te Tangata
The aim of this course of study is to demonstrate the expression of ūkaipōtanga through ako by cultivating decision making skills that protect, maintain and enhance the rawa of Kura Tikanga Māori.

The aim of this course of study is to advocate the expression of rangatiratanga through ako to contribute to the resilience and prosperity of whānau, hapū, and iwi.

To examine the expression of tino rangatiratanga in the continued pursuit of mana ā-hapū.

To contribute to hapū and iwi ceremonial events by gaining an advanced knowledge of the specialised language, meaning, appropriate use and performance of mōteatea, karanga and whaikōrero with a particular focus on hui mate.

Te Reo and Iwi and Hapū Studies
Each year, you will complete weekly tutorials and activities in Te Reo via our online space, Mūrau. These not only prepare you to attend two five-day long hui rumaki reo on campus each semester; but will further enhance your journey as you learn the value and mana our language holds in the whakaakoranga space. Yes, it can be scary, but you will not be taking the journey alone nor do you do not need to have any reo to begin! You will be guided every step of the way with tutor support.
You will also study two papers per year in Iwi and Hapū studies to compliment your learning, these are often the most rewarding part of study for the majority of our students as they gain a deep connection back to their roots. Your Iwi and Hapū papers will be online with excellent tutor support to help you through, week by week activities. The assignments that you complete will become a taonga and resource for your whānau, marae, iwi and will be treasured for years to come. You are encouraged to complete your iwi and hapū studies through the eyes of a teacher and use them to create meaningful taonga for future generations.
Te Reo and Iwi and Hapū studies begin in the first week of the academic year, so you can begin your studies before your first specialisation noho. You will also get the opportunity to meet your reo and iwi and hapū pūkenga during your first noho on campus.New Paragraph
