What You'll Learn
The Tāhuhu Whakahaere integrates tikanga Māori, te reo, and iwi and hapū studies with core management disciplines. You will learn to plan, lead, organise, and control business affairs through a Māori world view, developing the strategic and cultural competencies for senior leadership.
Course Structure
The Tāhuhu Whakahaere is a two-year master's qualification. Year One is completed through the Poutāhū Whakahaere (Postgraduate Diploma in Māori and Management). Each year you will also complete two papers towards your Te Reo component.
Minimum age of 17 years. A level of proficiency in te reo Māori required. Support from a hapū/iwi to conduct research. Must hold an undergraduate degree or have appropriate knowledge and experience to study at postgraduate level. Regular internet access, email address and computer or laptop with a working mic and camera are required.

TWHA401 - Pae Tāwhiti, Ngā Pae Tata Whakamaua Kia Tina – Integration of Learning
Students’ will be introduced to Māori philosophies that inform both organisational culture and one’s own philosophy.

TWHA402 - Mana Rautaki – Strategy, Analysis and Decision Making in Management
The course will examine hapū and iwi decision-making models as foundations for effective Māori Management.

TWHA403 - Mana Tangata – Paihere Tangata and the Legal Environment
Students will apply kaupapa Māori to organisational design and the interpretation of legislative requirements as a mana enhancing tool.

Students will explore how kaupapa Māori-informed operational and project management processes can elevate and support Māori aspirations.

To explore the depth of the contribution that kaumātua make to the statement ‘Our people are our wealth’.

To examine active participation on the marae through a study of hapū tikanga, and the contribution those tikanga make to the statement, ‘The marae is our principal home’.

TWH501 - Management Education and the Māori Nation
The aim of this course of study is to provide ākonga with the opportunity and direction to research and explain the possible contributions of elements of management education, some of which have been studied in year one of the degree, to the survival and prosperity of the Māori nation.

To contribute to hapū and iwi ceremonial events by gaining an advanced knowledge of the specialised language, meaning, appropriate use and performance of mōteatea, karanga and whaikōrero with a particular focus on hui mate.

How You'll Learn
Residential Seminars (Noho) Attend intensive on-campus residential seminars in Ōtaki, combining management theory with tikanga Māori practice.
Self-Directed Learning Independent research, assignments, and management case studies completed throughout the year.
Te Reo Component Two te reo papers per year, attending noho on campus (or online as per the course schedule).
Iwi and Hapū Papers Two online papers per year delivered with weekly tutor support and activities.
Online Seminars (Noho) Engage in online webinars and tutorials with opportunities for discussion and wananga learning.

Is This Course Right For You?
If you are wanting to climb up the corporate ladder, integrate tikanga Māori or move your profit or non-profit organisation into a value- based, kaupapa driven organisation, this master’s programme will certainly help you attain that. As a graduate of this programme you will be well sought after both in business or for iwi and hapū affairs. Graduates of the first year to this master degree complete the Poutāhū Whakahaere, a postgraduate diploma, awarded at Level 7.
Te Reo and Iwi and Hapū Studies
Each year, you will complete two papers towards your Te Reo component attending noho on campus (or online as per the course schedule). This will prepare you for written and oral assessments and add to your kete in the Māori business management space! You will be guided every step of the way with tutor support.
You will also complete two papers in Iwi and Hapū studies each year to compliment your learning, these are often the most rewarding part of study for the majority of our students as they gain a deep connection back to their roots. Your Iwi and Hapū papers will require research, writing and critical analysis of two prescribed kaupapa with tutor support to help you through. The assignments that you complete will become a taonga and resource for your whānau, marae, iwi and will be treasured for years to come as well as enhancing your whakahaere journey.
Online components begin in the first week of the academic year, so you can begin your studies before your first specialisation noho. You will also get the opportunity to meet your reo and iwi and hapū pūkenga during your first noho on campus.
